Our lab investigates the basic molecular mechanisms of how cells transduce information, a process know as cell signaling. We focus on a key signaling enzyme, protein kinase C, which is generally a little too active in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease, and not active enough in many cancers. Understanding protein kinase C mechanisms is a first step in developing therapies to restore (cancer) or inhibit (Alzheimer’s Disease) protein kinase C so that it functions normally. We also study the phosphatase PHLPP which has many cellular functions, including opposing protein kinase C signaling.
